Convergence of disruptive technologies is accelerating change and giving rise to the age of abundance and exponential growth. Historically, economics has been based on scarcity, but the convergence of exponential growth in computational capacity, sensors and networks (IoT), big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual and augmented reality, synthetic biotechnology, robotics, drones and 3D printing are dramatically changing the paradigms that have been the base for the conception and construction of legal regulation. The panel will bring together experts that will address questions such as:
• How to regulate life of civil society in this new age?
• Will the sharing economy change the way in which we approach the concept of private property?
• Will sensors and IoT rationalise the use of natural resources?
• Will the world see the end of all intermediation contracts?
• What will be the impact of fintech, crowdfunding, big data, cryptocurrencies and blockchain in the financial sector as the world understands it nowadays?
• What will be the most efficient way for law and regulation to close the gap and catch-up with the realities of disruptive technologies?
• What will be the impact of these disruptive technologies on the legal profession?

This session will focus on the impact, value, and challenges of data as an asset on the legal services market. Just like any other, the market for legal services globally has been impacted (and will continue to be impacted) by the use of data analysis and ‘Big Data’. Now law firms and other entities that render legal services must consider the use of data to adapt their business strategies. This change will also carry challenges that come along with the use of data, such as the protection of privacy and other regulations that might be applicable.

In an increasingly data-driven world with changes in the way that personal data is used, privacy regulations are set to be a major talking point in 2023. Governments and regulatory bodies seem determined in reforming laws that govern privacy protection and how organisations must put procedures and policies in place to secure personal information. The extraterritorial use of personal data of companies are under pressure to adapt to evolving global privacy norms and to face challenges concerning investigations for unlawful use of personal information.
This session will discuss how to find balance in regulation in a data-centric technology era, strengthening rights of users, pushing for enhanced privacy accountability mechanisms for organisations and look at how current laws can be enforced around the globe.
