Acceleration, artificiality and abundance: how will the convergence of disruptive technologies impact the practice of law?

Wednesday 22 March (1430 - 1600)

Committee(s)

Latin American Regional Forum (Lead)

Description

Convergence of disruptive technologies is accelerating change and giving rise to the age of abundance and exponential growth. Historically, economics has been based on scarcity, but the convergence of exponential growth in computational capacity, sensors and networks (IoT), big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual and augmented reality, synthetic biotechnology, robotics, drones and 3D printing are dramatically changing the paradigms that have been the base for the conception and construction of legal regulation. The panel will bring together experts that will address questions such as:

• How to regulate life of civil society in this new age?

• Will the sharing economy change the way in which we approach the concept of private property?

• Will sensors and IoT rationalise the use of natural resources?

• Will the world see the end of all intermediation contracts?

• What will be the impact of fintech, crowdfunding, big data, cryptocurrencies and blockchain in the financial sector as the world understands it nowadays?

• What will be the most efficient way for law and regulation to close the gap and catch-up with the realities of disruptive technologies?

• What will be the impact of these disruptive technologies on the legal profession?
