Attacks on media freedom
US President Donald Trump has said he plans to sue the BBC for up to $5bn over its editing of a speech he gave on 6 January 2021. The row marks the latest example of Trump threatening the media, part of a global trend in which the press is increasingly targeted by governments and powerful figures.
Annual Conference highlights
The 2025 IBA Annual Conference was held in Toronto, Canada, from 2 to 7 November. The conference featured leading international figures, including a former Canadian Supreme Court judge and a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist whose work exposed the Watergate scandal, discussing timely and important issues.
Gun control
Activist and Trump ally Charlie Kirk was fatally shot in September 2025 while speaking at a campus event in Utah. The killing of Kirk – which took place on the same day as a shooting at a high school in Colorado – illustrates the need for greater gun control in the US.
Refugees and migration
In the US, a federal judge ruled that President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops in LA in response to protests against raids by the country's immigration enforcement agency was illegal. The Supreme Court has since ruled that ICE agents can continue to stop suspects without 'reasonable suspicion', permitting them to question individuals based solely on their race, language or job. These rulings come as President Trump's sweeping immigration raids continue, part of the growing trend of governments cracking down on migrants and refugees globally.
Famine, poverty and the importance of aid
Growing conflict and instability are pushing an increasing number of people into extreme poverty and destitution, with the ongoing famine in some parts of Gaza just one example. The situation further emphasises the importance of humanitarian aid, a sector facing great challenges.
