Biography
Justice Tejas Karia is a sitting judge of the High Court of Delhi. Prior to his elevation, he was Partner and Head – Arbitration of India’s leading law-firm, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. and specialized in International Commercial Arbitration and Information Technology Law having handled complex, high-value arbitrations across sectors before international and domestic arbitration tribunals seated in India, Singapore and London. He also sat as an arbitrator in institutional arbitrations. Justice Karia has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s arbitration landscape by advising on key legislative reforms, including drafting of amendments to the Arbitration Act, the Commercial Courts Act and the Mediation Act. He was a member of High-Powered Committee for institutionalization of Arbitration in India and Expert Committee for reforms in the Arbitration Act. He is a member of Arbitration Committee of Delhi International Arbitration Centre. Previously, Justice Karia held key positions as a member of the SIAC Court of Arbitration, ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, Director of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators – India Branch, Vice-President of the Arbitration Bar of India, Member of the Governing Council of the Indian Law Society, Vice-Chairman of the Society of Construction Law – India and Director of the Indian Arbitration Forum. He is regularly invited as a Resource Person at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. He has received accolades for his work in arbitration. He was ranked in 'Band 1' for arbitration by Chambers & Partners and recognized as a 'Distinguished Lawyer' and ‘Elite Practitioner’ for dispute resolution by Asialaw Profiles. Who's Who Legal: Arbitration listed him as a 'Thought Leader' and 'Global Leader', Benchmark Litigation as a 'Dispute Resolution Star', and Legal 500 as a 'Leading Individual' for Arbitration. Forbes India Legal Power List ranked him as a ‘Top Individual Lawyer’ for Arbitration and Information Technology Law, and ALB Asia listed him as one of Asia's Super 50 Dispute Lawyers.
