Biography

Soo Won Hwang is the Executive Legal Officer and General Counsel of the Americas Division at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited, New York Branch. She is also a member of the Bank’s Senior Management Group, advising on governance, strategy and legal risk. She has extensive expertise in international and domestic financing agreements, foreign investments, banking securities and banking regulation. For over 30 years, she has overseen all aspects of the Bank’s legal and regulatory compliance matters, including the development and implementation of internal policies to ensure adherence to banking laws and regulations such as the Bank Holding Company Act and Bank Secrecy Act. In addition to managing litigation, credit transactions, employment law, regulatory audits and reviews, bilateral and syndicated credit transactions, Hwang leads the Bank’s in-house legal team and regularly coordinates with the business teams and external counsel. Hwang also often participates at seminars and international conferences on finance and banking law and regulation.
