Matt Carpenter-Dennis

Biography

As Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the NBA, Matt Carpenter-Dennis is responsible for overseeing NBA team ownership transactions, capital structuring, arena financings, and arena lease negotiations. In this role, Carpenter-Dennis is also responsible for managing the legal affairs of the NBA’s strategic and corporate development initiatives, including the establishment of the NBA 2K League and Basketball Africa League, and the formation of the NBA’s venture capital arm, NBA Investments. Carpenter-Dennis serves as Secretary for NBA Africa, the NBA Foundation and the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition. Carpenter-Dennis currently serves on the Merrimack College board of trustees and is co-chair of the New York City Bar Association’s Sports Law Corporate Sub-Committee. Before joining the NBA in 2016, Carpenter-Dennis was associated with the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York and London, where he was a member of the corporate and private funds practice groups. Carpenter-Dennis is a 2006 graduate of Columbia University and a 2010 graduate of Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard International Law Journal. Carpenter-Dennis was named to Sports Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40” list in 2023. Carpenter-Dennis currently resides in Brooklyn with his wife, Mansi, and two children.
