Biography

I am a a partner in Stephenson Harwood's commercial litigation team and head up its contentious data protection and sports practices. I have extensive experience in all aspects of dispute resolution including arbitration, litigation, and regulatory investigations, with a particular focus on the financial, technology and sports sectors, cyber-security, data protection and reputation management. My experience also encompasses dealing with issues arising from allegations of fraud, insolvency claims, and a wide variety of applications for interim relief. I have acted for, and against, sovereign states and other governmental entities, banks, and corporates, including high profile entities across a range of sectors (finance, commodities, property and so forth), as well as high-net worth individuals, and the majority of my instructions include a significant cross-border element. Whilst my practice spans the full gamut of corporate and commercial disputes, I have particularly notable experience of, and expertise and interest in, advising majority and minority shareholders, directors, interested third parties, and companies in the context of shareholder disputes (both in relation to private and public companies) and co-venturers and other interested parties in the context of partnership disputes (in relation to limited liability partnerships, limited partnerships, and partnerships at will). My recent experience includes:  Advising one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds in respect of allegations of bribery made against it by the UK regulatory authorities in relation to investments valuing in excess of £4.5 billion; and  Advising minority shareholders in seeking to set-aside a non-pre-emptive placing of ordinary shares in a UK plc of over £600m on the basis that it was undertaken for an improper purpose; and  Advising in relation to two substantial representative actions against major technology companies arising from systemic breaches of data protection legislation, including in relation to childrens' data. In each case these claims seek damages running to billions of pounds. I have also acted on some of the most significant cases before the English Courts including advising Mukhtar Ablyazov in defending claims in excess of $7 billion commenced against him by BTA Bank and advising Boris Berezovsky in relation to various disputes with his former business associate and advisers. I am recognised by the Legal 500 as a recommended lawyer in commercial litigation, public international law, sport and data protection privacy and cybersecurity.
