Al-Karim Makhani

Biography

Al-Karim leads TransPerfect Legal's UK, EMEA and APAC divisions, which boast industry leading legal technology teams working on hundreds of complex, high profile matters globally. In particular, his teams were instructed on half of The Lawyer’s top 20 Cases of 2024. He advises law firms and corporates on the data centric issues on contentious matters by optimising automation, analytics and artificial intelligence. Prior to his move into the technology space, Al-Karim was a senior disputes practitioner in the London and Hong Kong offices of Stephenson Harwood. He lectures at various academic institutions including University of London and University of Law where, he designed and delivered the eDiscovery lecture within the revamped SQE. He regularly contributes to leading industry bodies like the ICC, IBA and AIJA. Al-Karim authored a chapter on disintermediation and dematerialisation in Kluwers Laws textbook on International Arbitration. He was appointed as an advisor to the Ministry of Justice and DTIs Great Legal Futures. Throughout 2023 he has been to prepare and educate lawyers at top firms across a number of disciplines, industries and jurisdictions (below). He is passionate about leveraging technology to improve access to justice. In January 2024 Al-Karim was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Tower Hamlets Law Centre – which gives a voice to people who are often in crisis, vulnerable, marginalised by society and experiencing discrimination. Having almost a decade of experience in practice and technology respectively places him in a unique position to truly understand client’s needs and goals.
