Karthik Balisagar
Biography
Karthik is a Senior Managing Director in the Economic and Financial Consulting practice of FTI Consulting and is based in London. Karthik leads the Economic and Financial Consulting practice in India. He brings more than 18 years of experience in valuation, assessment of damages and transaction consulting. At FTI, Karthik specialises in valuation and damages issues in the context of international arbitration and litigation. Over the past decade, Karthik has carried out more than 300 valuations and advised banks, private equity firms, institutional investors and corporates in Europe, Asia and the United States, on both contentious and non-contentious valuation-related matters. In contentious matters, Karthik has led projects as an expert on damages calculation. Karthik has prepared or assisted with the preparation of expert reports for submission to Singapore, UK, Dutch and EU courts, as well as in arbitrations under ICC, HKIAC, ICSID, UNCITRAL and LCIA rules. He is currently acting as the expert in several disputes, including investor-state disputes, assessing the losses suffered by the investors of retail banks in the context of the host states’ breaches of investment treaties. Karthik is featured in the 2022 and 2023 editions of Who’s Who Legal as a future leader in arbitration expert witnesses. As a GAR Insights contributor, Karthik has authored a chapter on “Assessing Damages for Breach of Contract” in The Guide to Damages in International Arbitration – Fourth Edition. In non-contentious matters, Karthik has advised clients in valuing their equity portfolios, loan books and management incentive structures, as well as conducting purchase price allocations, impairment reviews, financial due diligence and valuations related to M&A/private equity transactions. Karthik is also currently helping the firm build the Latin American Economic Consulting practice and has trained more than 500 lawyers in the region on issues relating to valuation and damages. Prior to joining FTI Consulting London, Karthik worked as a Director at Duff & Phelps (“D&P”) in Singapore. At D&P, Karthik helped develop the valuation and transaction advisory practice in south-east Asia. Prior to joining D&P, Karthik was part of the valuation team at Grant Thornton UK LLP. At Grant Thornton, Karthik specialised in fair value reviews for the UK National Audit practice and was considered to be the principal contact for technical matters relating to financial reporting valuations.
