Emmanuel Sebijjo Ssemmanda

Biography

Emmanuel specializes in the law of regional organizations, particularly the EAC, AfCFTA and EU. He is part of the International Law Association’s Study Group on the International Law of Regional Organizations, and is the Study Group’s regional delegate on the law of regional organizations in Africa (including the EAC, COMESA, SADC, ECOWAS, AfCFTA, etc). Emmanuel is also a Law Reporter in the East African jurisdiction for the Oxford Reports on International Law. Emmanuel is Dean Faculty of Law at the International University of East Africa where he teaches Public International Law and International Trade Law, including EAC, AfCFTA and EU law. Emmanuel is also the Executive Director at the African Institute of Regional Integration Studies – a think-tank on regional integration processes in Africa, and Director at the Centre for Law, Economics and Policy on East African Integration – a research centre on the process of East African integration. His journal articles and textbook – Regional Integration Law in the East African Community and European Union (Clep EAI, 2018) – have been cited by courts of law and found resourceful by lawyers as well as students on the subjects of EAC and EU law. Emmanuel’s private practice is with Cardigan Arbitration LLP, where he is the Partner for International Trade and Investment – advising and representing clients in arbitration proceedings while also sitting as arbitrator when appointed. Emmanuel holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nottingham and a Master of Laws (Comparative Regional Integration Law) from the University of Dar es Salaam. He is currently a Doctoral researcher at Leiden University on the comparative aspects of EAC, AfCFTA and EU law.
