Katharina Garbers-von Boehm

Biography

Katharina Garbers-von Boehm is one of the leading art lawyers in Germany, with a strong inter-national practice, and a founding partner at the Berlin based boutique law firm onto partners. Her practice includes complex commercial law matters, complex transactional work, matters relating to title issues, copyright matters, cultural property protection issues (im- and export of cultural goods; listing proceedings etc.), as well as the so-called “soft law” which has developed around the topic of “looted art” for all players in the art market, such as artists, fabricators, gal-leries, collectors, family offices, banks, museums, institutions, estates etc. In addition, she is ac-tive in the areas of IP and IT law across all sectors. She advises and, if necessary, litigates. Katharina has been appointed an arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration for Art (CAfA) and by the Camera Arbitrale di Venezia. Katharina is practicing as a lawyer since 2007. She is continuously recognized by Best Lawyers and Chambers. She has published extensively in relevant journals on intellectual property law, private clients matters, and art law. She is a frequent speaker and panelist at international con-ferences (IBA, UIA, FBA and Libralex among others) and has given lectures at the Berlin Univer-sity of Applied Sciences (HTW). Katharina´s educational background includes: law studies in Heidelberg (1997-1998), a Maîtrise en Droit (mention droit des affaires) at Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) (1999-2000), law studies in Berlin (1999-2003) followed by an LL.M. in Interna-tional Studies in Intellectual Property (Exeter/Dresden) (2004); a doctorate about the digitiza-tion of museum archives (2005-2008). In January 2025, after being a partner at Büsing, Müffelmann & Theye for six years, she co-founded onto partners, a law firm advising on all key areas of business law and art law, particu-larly in matters of strategy, transactions, and operations, as well as complex commercial litiga-tion. Katharina is fluent in German, English and French and reads Italian.
