A webinar presented by the IBA Forum for Government and Public Lawyers, supported by the IBA Judges’ Forum and the IBA Rule of Law Forum
Government and public lawyers are involved in multiple areas of the law, including litigating on behalf of government.
Generally, lawyers globally hold a paramount duty to the court and the administration of justice. How do government and public lawyers respond when faced with challenges, including navigating the dual role of legal practitioners and officers of the court at the same as being service providers and acting in the best interests of the client government or public institution? What does it mean to be a ‘model litigant’ and what does the judiciary expect of the government or public lawyer? How does a government or public lawyer uphold and defend the rule of law in the face of challenge?
This webinar explores the role of government and public lawyers within justice systems, including courts, tribunals and dispute resolution processes. The webinar will hear a number of perspectives on this important topic, including from current and former government and public lawyers, a current Supreme Court judge, and an expert on the rule of law.
