A webinar presented by the IBA Legal Policy & Research Unit, supported by the IBA Business Human Rights Committee
The effects that companies have on biodiversity can expose them to legal risks and can also be linked with negative human rights impacts – particularly the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities. Currently, however, there is a lack of understanding among many companies of what their biodiversity impacts are.
In October 2024, Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will gather in Colombia at UN CBD COP16, to assess progress on implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This landmark agreement, agreed in 2022, asks countries to implement measures to help companies to assess and address their biodiversity impacts, including through corporate biodiversity risk disclosure frameworks.
Against this background, this webinar brings together an expert panel of legal practitioners and business human rights specialists to explore how businesses’ biodiversity impacts and dependencies intersect with human rights impacts, and what this means for lawyers advising in a range of contexts.
