We, the undersigned 26 Bar Associations, Law Societies, and organisations supporting the legal profession of over 14 countries, stand in solidarity with our Iranian colleague Nasrin Sotoudeh and other lawyers in Iran who are being persecuted by their Government for carrying out their profession diligently and in accordance with the law.

The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) condemns the assassination of senior Iranian nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh on 27 November 2020. Mr Fakhrizadeh, described by some individuals as the individual spearheading Iran’s alleged covert nuclear weapons programme, was assassinated while travelling in his car in the Abe-Sard region of Damavand Count, 40 kilometres outside of Tehran

IBAHRI condemns the persecution and sentencing of Egyptian human rights defender Bahey eldin Hassan
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) condemns the arrest of Bahey eldin Hassan, prominent Egyptian human rights defender and Director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), following his critical comments against the Public Prosecutor in Egypt. Mr Hassan was sentenced, in absentia, on September 19 2019 to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of 20,000 Egyptian pounds.

IBAHRI condemns Turkish military operation in northern Syria
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) strongly condemns the recent assaults against Syrian Kurds by Turkish forces in northern Syria, and calls on Turkey to halt the attacks. Although Turkey has not ratified any of the additional protocols to the 1949 Geneva Convention, prohibitions of attacks on civilians are a norm of customary international law. Customary international humanitarian law provides that attacks must not be directed against civilians.

Detention of human rights lawyer Amirsalar Davoodi in Iran of deep concern
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) is deeply concerned by the continued detention of human rights lawyer, Amirsalar Davoodi, without legal representation. A regular user of social media platforms as well as his Telegram channel, Without Retouch, to speak out about human rights concerns in Iran, Mr Davoodi was arrested in the country on 20 November 2018 and charged with crimes against national security. Access to his lawyer has been denied and family visits left wanting.

HRI Training Manuals on Human Rights and Accountability Mechanisms for Syrian Legal Professionals
The IBAHRI partnered with the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) to strengthen the capacity of Syrian lawyers to engage with international human rights mechanisms. The project, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), aims to develop a short and long-term engagement strategy of Syrian justice sector actors with human rights mechanisms.

Accountability in Syria: The Role of the International, Impartial and Independent mechanism
In March 2018, the IBAHRI co-organised an event with the Geneva Academy to discuss the work of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism on international crimes committed in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIIM). The discussion focused on the IIIM’s existing and future national, regional or international investigations and prosecutions of the most serious crimes committed in Syria.

IBAHRI condemns the planned Israeli annexation of the West Bank and Jordan Valley
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) is alarmed at plans to annex the parts of West Bank and the Jordan Valley occupied by Israel. The plan, initiated by United States President, Donald Trump, and now adopted by the Israeli coalition Government, is scheduled to come into action as early as 1 July 2020. This move could be a fatal blow to the prospects of Israeli-Palestinian peace and would have grave consequences for the Palestinians.
