Second wave of LGBTQ+ crackdown by Russian authorities in Chechnya condemned by IBAHRI
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) is appalled by the recent reports that over 40 persons have been detained in a recent crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community in Chechnya by the Russian authorities. Two of those who were detained have reportedly died in custody.
The IBAHRI has called on the Russian authorities to conduct an independent inquiry into these reports and ensure compliance with international law. The IBAHRI has also reminded the Russian authorities of the recent report conducted by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which drew attention to the ‘climate of impunity’ for those committing acts such as this.
