In memoriam - Stephen Denyer (1955 - 2024)
Friday 19 January 2024
Dear IBA Friends and Colleagues,
It is with the deepest sorrow that I share with you Stephen Denyer’s passing on 14 January.
Stephen’s commitment to and generosity towards the IBA resulted in a giant contribution to our Association, as well as more broadly to the international legal community.
Stephen’s outstanding abilities and the high regard in which he was held, was demonstrated by the number of important roles he assumed; including as a member of the IBA Management Board, Chair of the Section on Public and Professional Interest, Co-Chair of the Rule of Law Forum and member of the Nominations Committee, amongst other positions.
Beyond Stephen’s impressive career, his personality and values leave an indelible mark. He inspired and helped many of us with his unique combination of brightness, wisdom, kindness, empathy, sense of humour and strength.
While the IBA community mourns together for such a devastating loss, I trust we also feel fortunate for the privilege of having known Stephen and having learnt so much from him. His legacy will continue to live through us.
Our sympathy and prayers are with his family and with his very many friends and colleagues at the Law Society of England and Wales, at Allen & Overy and all over the world.
Stephen will be very dearly missed. May he rest in peace.
