Tuesday 14 November 2023
The annual International Bar Association (IBA) International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition is open for registrations for the 2024 edition, taking place from 31 May – 7 June 2024 in The Hague, the Netherlands. Teams must register their participation by 20 November 2023.
Organised in partnership with the Leiden University’s Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies and the International Criminal Court (ICC), the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition is one of the largest international moot court competitions focused on public international law, with around 600 students from over 45 countries participating in 2023.

In 2023, when it celebrated its tenth anniversary, the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition featured high-level speakers including ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan, and Universidade Federal da Bahia, a team from Brazil won the competition, arguing the final round in the ICC courtroom before ICC Judge Althea Violet Alexis-Windsor and ICC Legal Officers Cynthia Chamberlain and Farhaan Ahmed.
The IBA ICC Moot Court Competition is a large-scale educational program bringing together students of different backgrounds and cultures to simulate the judicial proceedings of the ICC. The competition is designed to enhance law students’ knowledge of the Rome Statute and the proceedings of the ICC through a fictitious case by addressing fundamental issues of substantive and procedural international criminal law.
Over the course of a week, students participating in the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition engage in a comprehensive educational and social programme designed to create learning and networking opportunities. The competition itself is structured into two rounds – a written and an oral one – in which each team takes on the roles of prosecution counsel, defence counsel and, depending on the case, the roles of victims’ counsel or government counsel alternatively. The written round takes place remotely with the submission of written memorials by the participating teams, while the oral round, including the finals, is held in The Hague. During the oral round of the competition, hearings are presided over by international law experts and practitioners, including serving and former ICC judges.

The International Bar Association (IBA), the global voice of the legal profession, is the foremost organisation for international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. Established in 1947, shortly after the creation of the United Nations, with the aim of protecting and promoting the rule of law globally, the IBA was born out of the conviction that an organisation made up of the world's bar associations could contribute to global stability and peace through the administration of justice. The IBA acts as a connector, enabler, and influencer, for the administration of justice, fair practice, and accountability worldwide. The IBA has collaborated on a broad range of ground-breaking, international projects with the United Nations, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, The Commonwealth, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, among others.
- The IBA commenced the International Criminal Court and International Criminal Law (ICC & ICL) Programme in 2005. The Programme monitors issues related to fairness and equality of arms at the ICC and other Hague-based war crimes tribunals and encourages the legal community to engage with the work of these courts. The IBA’s work includes thematic legal analysis of proceedings, and ad hoc evaluations of legal, administrative, and institutional issues which could potentially affect the rights of defendants, the impartiality of proceedings and the development of international justice.
The Programme also acts as the interface between the Courts and the global legal community. As such, special focus is placed on monitoring emerging issues of particular relevance to lawyers and collaborating with key partners on specific activities to increase engagement of the legal community on ICC and ICL issues.
Based in The Hague, the IBA ICC & ICL Programme consults and interacts with court officials, civil society organisations, academics, and international lawyers.
