This year’s retreat was held in Santorini, Greece between 16–18 May. It was an unforgettable event that brought together legal professionals from across Europe. Hosted by the esteemed Drakopoulos law firm, the retreat offered a unique blend of professional development and personal enrichment against the stunning backdrop of Santorini’s iconic landscapes.

For me, this retreat was particularly significant as it was my first IBA European Regional Forum (ERF) retreat since joining the ERF Council last year. Representing Estonia and serving as an attorney at law and Co-Head of the information technology/intellectual property/fintech practice at WIDEN Legal Estonia, I was eager to engage with peers and contribute to the ERF’s ongoing initiatives.

A very important part of the retreat was the ERF Officers and Council Members Working Session. This was an insightful and productive meeting where we focused on the ERF guidelines and also the past and upcoming activities and conferences. Participants were divided into breakout groups to discuss various topics. I participated in the startup conference discussion, given my extensive experience with technology startups. This session was vibrant and collaborative culminating in the exciting announcement of the 7th Annual IBA European Start-up Conference  scheduled for 13 November 2024, in Stockholm.

In addition to the conference planning, I joined the next gen law group discussion, where we explored the challenges faced by the next generation of lawyers. This discussion underscored the evolving landscape of the legal profession and the need for adaptability in response to new demands and opportunities. Presenting our group’s insights to the retreat attendees was a highlight, as it facilitated a broader conversation on these critical issues.

Beyond the official sessions, the retreat also featured delightful social events. The evenings were filled with exquisite food and engaging conversations, allowing attendees to forge deeper connections in a relaxed setting. The informal interactions and camaraderie during these events added a personal touch to the retreat, enhancing the overall experience.

The ERF retreat in Santorini was more than just a professional gathering, it was a celebration of community and shared purpose among legal professionals. The event provided a platform for meaningful discussions, networking and the exchange of best practices, all while fostering a sense of unity and collaboration.

Looking ahead, the upcoming initiatives and conferences, particularly the startup conference in Stockholm, promise to build on the momentum generated in Santorini. The retreat left me inspired and more connected with my fellow council members, and I am excited about our continued efforts to advance the goals of the ERF.

In conclusion, the ERF retreat in Santorini was a resounding success, combining professional growth with personal enrichment in an idyllic setting. It highlighted the importance of community and collaboration within the legal profession, setting the stage for future advancements and shared achievements.
