The IBA Human Rights Law Committee hosted a webinar on ‘Human rights and nuclear legacy in the Marshall Islands’ on 1 July 2026, which was co-presented by the IBA Rule of Law Forum, the IBA Environment, Health and Safety Law Committee, and the IBA Human Rights Institute.
President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands – Her Excellency Dr. Hilda C. Heine delivered the keynote remarks. The webinar brought together leading international law experts to discuss the legal course of actions to ensure justice for the Marshall Islands from the perspective of health, environmental and intergenerational harms caused by the US’ Nuclear Testing Program between 1946 and 1958.
Earlier, in January 2026, officers of the IBA Human Rights Law Committee with support of the IBA Legal Policy & Research Unit, the IBA Environment, Health and Safety Committee, and the IBA Rule of Law Forum submitted a report to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights examining the human rights impact of Marshall Islands' nuclear legacy. Consequent to the submission of the report, the webinar signifies continued engagement and endeavours of the IBA Human Rights Law Committee to promote human rights and environmental justice for the Marshall Islands.
