Biography

Michael Coates is General Counsel Corporate of Shell. In this role, Michael leads a global team of lawyers and other professionals supporting Shell’s enterprise-level activities. He joined Shell in 2004 from the London office of Slaughter and May, where he worked as a mergers & acquisitions and corporate finance lawyer. During his career at Shell, Michael has served as UK Head of Legal, Associate General Counsel of the Downstream and Upstream businesses, Executive Committee Secretary and Private Secretary to the Chief Executive Officer. Michael is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Directors, a member of the LPD Council of the International Bar Association and a member of the Development Board of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law. He also serves as Non-Executive Chairman of Sizewell C Funded Decommissioning Company in the UK.
