Biography

Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena is the founding partner of Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena Abogados in Mexico City and a former Justice of Mexico’s Supreme Court (2012–2025). His firm provides strategic advice and litigation counsel to Mexican and international clients facing complex disputes, investigations, and regulatory challenges, drawing on its founders’ experience in the Supreme Court, tax administration, and federal judiciary. He earned his law degree at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and his LL.M. at Harvard Law School, where he was a Fulbright–García Robles Scholar. On the Supreme Court, he authored landmark opinions advancing fundamental rights and defining constitutional limits on state power, including decisions on marriage equality, reproductive autonomy, disability rights, and environmental protection. Previously, as Commissioner of Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (2008–2012), he led its modernization and digital transformation. He serves on Harvard University’s Board of Overseers and the board of the National Autonomous University of Mexico Foundation, and has taught at Harvard Law School as the Henry J. Steiner Lecturer in Human Rights. He is the author of *Process and Punishment: Constitutional Foundations of Criminal Law* (Tirant lo Blanch). He also translated Justice Stephen Breyer’s *Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View* into Spanish and wrote the preface to the Spanish-language edition.
