Biography

Steve Crawshaw has worked on justice issues for many years as journalist, human rights advocate and author. He is the author of Prosecuting the Powerful: War Crimes and the Battle for Justice, shortlisted for the Moore Human Rights Prize (2026). He was chief correspondent and in other roles at the Independent, where he reported from Russia and covered the Balkan wars. He was U.K. and UN advocacy director for Hunan Rights Watch; international advocacy director and Director of the Office of the Secretary General at Amnesty International; policy and advocacy director at Freedom from Torture. Previous books include Street Spirit: The Power of Protest and Mischief (foreword by Ai Weiwei), Goodbye to the USSR, and Easier Fatherland: Germany and the Twenty-First Century.
