Biography

Ian is a Partner in the Intellectual Property Department at Deacons. He is a solicitor in Hong Kong, UK Chartered Patent Attorney, PRC GBA lawyer and registered PRC Patent Attorney. Ian has extensive experience advising universities, their technology transfer offices, and various government-funded R&D entities in Hong Kong on technology commercialization and IP matters, including software and copyright protection, technology import and export, as well as matters related to IP acquisitions, collaboration agreements, licensing agreements, ownership disputes, and providing technology clearance advice. Ian has also been advising on cross-border IP litigation and enforcement, and commercial matters with a focus on China and new technology, for over a decade. Ian’s wide-ranging practice covers complex patent litigation and enforcement, trademark anti-counterfeiting, cybersecurity risk and data protection, and hi-tech M&A work including IP due diligence, technology licensing negotiation, and tech spin-offs. In particular, drawing on his computer science and electronic engineering background, Ian advises on cutting-edge tech issues, including AI, critical infrastructure security, blockchain, NFTs, metaverses, and virtual assets.
