Nigel Blackaby
Biography
Nigel is a partner and former global head of the Freshfields’ international arbitration group, based in Washington DC. He is co-head of the firm’s Latin America practice. Over the last thirty years, he has acted as counsel and arbitrator in over 100 arbitrations, with a focus on mining and natural resources. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel for excellence in advocacy in 2020. Nigel has represented foreign investors and states in 50 investment arbitrations both in English and Spanish. Nigel is co-author of Redfern and Hunter on International Arbitration (4th, 5th , 6th and 7th editions Oxford, 2022), Guide to ICSID Arbitration (1st and 2nd edition, Kluwer, 2010), and International Arbitration in Latin America (Kluwer, 2003). He has been an adjunct professor of international investment at American University’s Washington College of Law since 2011. Recent mining cases include Crystallex v Venezuela; Rusoro v Venezuela; Glencore v Colombia and Eco Oro v Colombia.
