Luis Gabriel Morcillo

Biography

Mr. Morcillo joined Brigard & Urrutia in 2006 and is a Partner since 2014 in the Capital Markets, Private Equity, ESG and M&A Practice Groups. Mr. Morcillo focuses his practice on corporate finance, including both equity and debt offerings in the Colombian Stock Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange, and under 144A and Reg S rules. He has been involved in many of the largest securities offerings out of Colombia, including landmark offerings such as the first double-listed issuer, the first fixed income foreign issuer, the first simultaneous offering made both in Colombia and in international markets and the incorporation of the first ETF and the first private equity fund in Colombia. He also advises clients on Private Equity and Asset Management matters, including fund formation, fund raising and the implementation of investment policies for companies and projects in a cross-border basis, being a recognized leader on the development of the Colombian private equity industry. He also advises several national and foreign financial entities in fintech, financial services, impact investing, corporate governance and securities regulations. He has recently focused on ESG and in fostering the local ecosystem of impact funds and in developing sustainable and innovative finance in Colombia. Mr. Morcillo is a graduate of the School of Law of Universidad de Los Andes, with additional diplomas in History and Economics from the same university. He also earned an LL.M at University College London (UCL), where he was awarded the academic excellence Joseph Hume Scholarship. He attended Negotiation courses at Harvard Law School and was awarded a Diploma in Private Equity from Saïd Business School at Oxford University. He has attended several arbitration courses at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris and at the Chamber of Commerce of Bogota. Mr. Morcillo began his career as an intern at the Superintendence of Finance of Colombia. As part of his continuing academic formation, Mr. Morcillo regularly participates in presentations and conferences about private equity, the law of finance and impact investment, and is a regular lecturer at Universidad Javeriana, Universidad de Los Andes and EAFIT Business School in Colombia. Formerly, he was an assistant professor teaching public finance at Universidad de Los Andes. Currently he serves as board member on the National Advisory Board (NAB Colombia) for the Global Steering Group (GSG) on Impact Investment. Between 1995 and 1996, Mr. Morcillo served as infantry soldier with the Colombian Army, having an active role in the operations of the Multinational Force in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, being awarded with the Medal of Honor for his services.
