Biography
Doug Bryden Head of Environment & Operational Risk Partner, Travers Smith LLP (London) Doug specialises in UK, EU and international environment, governance and ESG law. His practice focuses on a range of compliance, risk and liability management issues. Be it advising on ‘long-tail’ environment and safety liabilities through to guiding boards and investors on corporate transparency, ESG, governance and crisis response, Doug is recognised as a leader in his field. Doug is ranked ‘Band 1’ in Chambers and Partners 2023, a ‘Leading Individual’ in Legal 500 2023 and a ‘Global Elite Thought Leader’ in Who’s Who Legal 2021. Selected work includes advising: • Global extractives PLC on long-tail environmental liability management. • One of the main consortium partners on managing environmental and safety legal risks and liabilities associated with the 2Africa project. • Defence of Camellia PLC against novel "parent company liability" claims concerning alleged human rights abuses in the operation of its African subsidiaries. • Brookfield, Oaktree, Carlyle and a number of other asset managers on UK and EU climate change and ESG reporting and regulatory compliance. Sector expertise Doug has particular expertise in the asset manager, energy, petrochemical and consumer products sectors and is the current co-chair of our cross-departmental ESG Group. International Doug regularly travels in support of the firm’s international activities and to strengthen our global network of leading specialist lawyers. Doug is a member of International Environmental Law Network and regularly speaks at industry conferences in Europe and North America.
