Biography

I've been practising maritime and international trade law in London since 1994, heading Stephenson Harwood's commodities team since 2008, which is widely recognised as one of the market leaders. I was inducted to the 2018 Legal 500 Hall of fame, reflecting continued recognition by the directory. While I have spent a large part of my career as a litigation lawyer, much of my time now is dedicated to helping clients deal with the changing business environment, which has brought me into contact with decarbonisation. I am leading my firm's partnership with the Global Maritime Forum, served on the drafting committee of the Sea Cargo Charter, and have been its legal advisor since it launched. I am co-ordinator of the Blue Visby Consortium and Chairman of the International Working Group of the Comite Maritime International. My main focus is on the contractual impact of decarbonisation measures, projects and strategies, as well as the risks of climate litigation. I have published and lectured extensively around the world, including for the IMO, BIMCO, at COP26, for universities and associations, and there was a time when I had the energy to publish a book on maritime law.
