Crackdown on human rights defenders, opposition and the right to a fair trial in Myanmar: Livestream of the UK Parliament event

The coup d’état on 1 February 2021 in Myanmar has resulted in all judicial, legislative and executive powers being transferred to the military. This transfer undermined the principle of separation of powers and the rule of law in Myanmar. The coup d’état was then followed by a crackdown on human rights defenders and opposition. As they were being arrested, detained and prosecuted, the right to a fair trial did not provide much assistance.

The report examines the challenges pertaining to the right to a fair trial in Myanmar, as affected by the coup d’état. The analysis focuses on the crackdown on human rights defenders and the opposition, the increase in arbitrary detentions, the conditions in which prisoners have been detained, the lack of access to legal counsel and the manner in which trials have been conducted.

The report also looks at the case of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other political leaders who became a target of the military.
