A webinar presented by the IBA Anti-Corruption Committee, the IBA Business Crime Committee and the IBA Criminal Law Committee
Grand corruption is the abuse of public power for private gain by a nation’s leader (known as a ‘kleptocrat’). It presents a major barrier to the promotion of democracy and human rights, the establishment of international peace and security, effective national responses to the climate crisis and health crises, and the development of a more just, rules-based global order.
This is not to say that grand corruption does not persist as a practice due to a lack of legal restriction. The 189 states who are party to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) each have legislation criminalising corrupt conduct. Yet kleptocrats enjoy impunity because of their influence over the administration of justice in the states that they govern. This webinar will thus explore how the creation and establishment of an International Anti-Corruption Court (IACC) would fill the crucial enforcement gap in the international framework for combatting grand corruption.
