IBAHRI statement on the situation of lawyers in Turkey
Today, 5 April 2019, on the occasion of the Lawyers’ Day in Turkey, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) joined with over 30 other associations and organisations concerned with the rule of law and protection of the rights of lawyers to strongly condemn the ongoing crackdown against lawyers in Turkey. Attacks against the legal profession, including arbitrary arrests, detentions and malicious prosecutions, have been taking place in the country prior to and after the failed coup of 2016. The IBAHRI remains concerned about these attacks which not only impact on the independence of the legal profession, but also on the protection of the rule of law and human rights of all citizens in the country. We join with the 33 organisations in the statement released today to call on the Turkish government to uphold the rule of law and bring an end to the persecution of lawyers.
