IBAHRI condemns Azerbaijan police crackdown on LGBTQ+ community
In September 2017, the Guardian reported that ‘at least 60 people [had] been imprisoned or fined after a spate of raids in the capital [of Azerbaijan], Baku’.1 The report included testimonies accusing the police of brutality, making arbitrary arrests and threatening further detention upon release. The arrests were part of a widespread crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community.
The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) is unequivocally committed to opposing any and all human rights violations based on a person’s real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The IBAHRI responded to the reports both publicly and privately with condemnation on social media as well as privately contacting the Azerbaijani authorities.
