Introduction
On 26 October 2018, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI), in collaboration with the African Commission’s Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, held a panel discussion on states’ obligations to mobilise resources to fulfil economic, social and cultural rights. The event took place on the fringes of the 63rd Ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, the Gambia.
Objectives
The event was held to:
- highlight the important link between states’ obligations to mobilise resources and their duty to fulfil minimum levels of human rights;
- discuss specific ways through which states can mobilise resources under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
- examine how the African Commission could engage with states on their obligation to mobilise resources;
- spell out recommendations on the role of key stakeholders to mobilise resources to fulfil economic, social and cultural rights; and
- provide an opportunity for stakeholders to share information and build linkages on the subject of mobilisation of resources.
