IBA Committees demonstrate commitment to social justice and the rule of law

The United Nations World Day of Social Justice is observed annually on 20 February and is based on the International Labour Organization (ILO) Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization. Unanimously adopted by the ILO on 10 June 2008, the declaration recognises that a strong social dimension to globalisation is imperative when it comes to achieving improved and fair outcomes for all and, at the same time, that the achievement and maintenance of peace and security within and among nations is dependent on social development and social justice.

Spotlight on the work of the IBA Global Employment Institute

To mark this year’s UN World Day of Social Justice, the International Bar Association (IBA) has spotlighted the work of its Global Employment Institute (GEI), in particular the report Digitalisation (Artificial Intelligence and Robotics) and its Impact on the World of Work – Part II, which reveals significant shifts are expected in office work, customer service and production. The report draws attention to the importance of a fair labour market to improve lives and create a more sustainable future for all.

Social justice through the integration of business and human rights

The IBA is reminding lawyers of two of its published guidelines that recommend frameworks for the integration of human rights and environmental due diligence regulations: the Updated IBA Business and Human Rights Guidance for Bar Associations (Updated Bar Guidance); and the Updated IBA Guidance Note on Business and Human Rights: The role of lawyers in the changing landscape (Updated Lawyers Guidance). By supporting the rule of law, sustainable development (that benefits all stakeholders, including businesses) and human dignity, the two IBA guidance documents assist in achieving social justice.

IBA specialist Committees focus discussion on ways to eradicate poverty

It is estimated that 575 million people live in extreme poverty. The video of a recent webinar organised by IBA specialist Committees that concentrated on UN Sustainable Development Goal 1 (End poverty in all its forms everywhere) is being shared in honour of the United Nations World Day of Social Justice on 20 February.
