SUMMARY:Welcome and opening remarks
DESCRIPTION:The core principles of international humanitarian law (IHL) s
tand on the precipice of extinction as the international community floun
ders in the face of excruciatingly acute conflicts and horrifying mass h
umanitarian crises. The International Criminal Court (ICC) faces an exis
tential threat and very real pervasive challenges stemming from its lack
of universality\, in addition to open attack from powerful non-States P
arties including the US\, Russia and Israel. Meanwhile\, the Internation
al Court of Justice (ICJ) is increasingly asked to examine the conformit
y of state conduct in war with international obligations\, including the
Genocide Convention.\nAs the international legal community fights to up
hold the hard-won fundamental principles of international law\, we come
together to discuss the intolerable risks of continued impunity\; the ch
allenges and opportunities encountered in the incredible work ongoing to
document raging attacks on civilian populations\; the weaponisation of
the digital arena and the challenges and opportunities it raises in the
search for the truth\; and the critical role that law stands to play in
the aftermath of the conflicts that must end.\n
