SUMMARY:Silencing the news: the use of SLAPPs worldwide and how to tackle
  them
DESCRIPTION:Legal actions and threatened legal actions are increasingly u
sed against journalists and media organisations to attempt to silence th
eir reporting and stop their work. SLAPPs (‘Strategic Lawsuits Against P
ublic Participation’) are typically brought by powerful individuals or c
orporations with the intention of harassing\, intimidating\, and financi
ally or psychologically exhausting opponents via improper use of the leg
al system\, and evading scrutiny in the public interest. They are often
framed as defamation cases brought by wealthy individuals against invest
igative journalists\, writers and publishers. SLAPPs undermine freedom o
f speech and the rule of law.\n\nThis expert panel will examine the grow
ing global trends in the use of SLAPPs\, and efforts to tackle them (inc
luding anti-SLAPP laws in the USA\, Canada and Europe).\n
