SUMMARY:IBA Showcase: bridging diverse interests in the extractive indust
 ries
DESCRIPTION:DiversityInclusionThe expectation for equitable\, socially in
clusive\, and environmentally sustainable practices and behaviour from e
xtractive industries investors has never been greater. It is a challengi
ng context for investors and industry players to achieve the right balan
cing act to meet these expectations\, while continuing to conduct essent
ial operations and develop projects that are necessary to meet global de
mand in the oil and gas and mining sectors.A lack of understanding about
the benefits deriving from and necessity for continued investments in t
he extractive industries seems to permeate the dialogue around the extra
ctive industries in many societies. Nonetheless\, we still see many dive
rse approaches from investors\, governments and communities across diffe
rent parts of the world when it comes to investment in extractive indust
ries\, project development and community relations.\n\nThis session will
attempt to discuss what is working in different parts of the globe\, re
viewing successful and not-so-successful experiences and how these pract
ical examples can help guide the evolution of the extractive industries
in the future.\n\nIn this context\, this showcase panel will:\n\n\n	addr
ess the viability of adopting some form of general standards for the ext
ractive industries\, seeking to offer a toolkit to balance the interests
of extractive industry investors and companies\, the development goals
and rights of affected communities and global sustainability and environ
mental objectives\;\n	present speakers from different backgrounds who wi
ll debate key topics\, including among other matters\, free and prior in
formed consent\, types of regulatory regimes\, impacts on affected commu
nities\, human rights\, economic participation and benefits sharing\, fi
scal stability and dispute resolution\; and\n	highlight the important ro
le of the legal community to collaborate in these efforts and help bridg
e the diverse interests of different stakeholders involved in and affect
 ed by the extractive industries.\n\n
