SUMMARY:Strengthening the preservation of online evidence of atrocities
DESCRIPTION:HumanRightsThe International Bar Association (IBA)\, UC Berke
ley Human Rights Center (Berkeley HRC)\, and Oxford Programme onInternat
ional Peace and Security (Oxford IPS) are working collaboratively to add
ress the need for greater preservation of and\naccess to social media ev
idence to strengthen legal accountability for human rights violations an
d atrocity crimes. Social media platforms have become the unintended arc
hives of information with historical and evidentiary value\, even though
\nsocial media companies do not necessarily have the incentives or infra
structure to properly and indefinitely identify and preservethis content
. Indeed\, the rate at which potentially relevant and probative content
is removed is rapidly increasing as political and\npublic pressure to re
move harmful content builds. In this session\, project participants will
report on their research into potential mechanisms for strengthening the
use of such digitalcontent in accountability processes\, and the most r
ecent activities that are underway to strengthen this work. Building on
theparticipants' ongoing efforts to improve investigations and documenta
tion of atrocity crimes\, this session will open a conversationwith sess
ion participants to:\n\n\n	clarify the relevance and probative value of
user-generated content to international legalproceedings\;\n	clarify the
requirements for and purposes of sharing relevant user-generated conten
t with international and regionallegal authorities\; and\n	explore poten
tial next steps for advancing the use of online content in international
  accountabilityprocesses.\n\n
